The Louisiana Wetlands are coastal and swamp regions of Southern Louisiana. A wetland may be defined as an area regularly saturated by surface water or groundwater. It is characterised by vegetation adapted for life in saturated soil. Southern Louisiana contains 40-45% of the wetlands found in the lower 48 states. Louisiana is the drainage gateway to the Gulf of Mexico for the Lower Mississippi Regional Watershed.
