Southern Africa Malawi The Forests The floristic composition of die forests of Malawi has been described in detail by Chapman and White (1970) and by Dowsett- Lemaire(1985, 1988, 1989a, 1990). Three main categories of rain forest can be recognised in the country: lowland, mid-altitude and Afromontane. The lowland forests are characterised by 30-40 m high emer- gents with buttresses and high spreading crowns such as Burltdavya nyasica, Khaya nyasica and Nezvtouta buchanami.
