Key to Species Panicle ovoid or oblong, usually not more than twice as long as wide 1. P. alpinum Panicle cylindric, several times longer than wide 2. P. pratense 1. ALPINE TIMOTHY (Phleum alpinum) is mostly 1-1 y2 ft (30-40 cm) tall, the culms curved or decumbent at base; pan- icle 8-10 mm thick, rarely more than IV2 m (4 cm) long, commonly shorter, bristly. (Fig. 86.) Distribution and habitat: Alpine timo- thy is most abundant on summer ranges in the Sierra Nevada up to altitudes of 11, 000 ft. It occurs less abundantly along the coast from Marin County northward and in Siskiyou, Modoc, and Riverside counties. It typically inhabits moist, mucky soils of meadows, swales, or bogs, where it is commonly associated with redtops, bluegrasses, meadow sedges, rushes, and hairgrass. Stands are some- times dense and nearly pure, but are more commonly scattered and of sec- ondary importance as range forage. Forage value and reproduction: Al- pine timothy is relished by all livestock and is highly palatable to elk and deer. Fig. 86. Alpine timothy (Phleum alpinum). [95].
