Description
The olive tree was first introduced into France by the Greeks 2,500 years ago and has been cultivated here ever since.
Flowers
The fragrant, creamy-white flowers are borne in the leaf axil.
Leaves
Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Long, wider in the middle, pointed, green above, silvery below.
Fruits Seeds
Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a shell/pit with a seed inside. Green, eventually deep purple.
Edible
Fruit: preserved green and black olives used extensively in the cuisine of the region; oil extracted from the fruit for culinary purposes.
Medical
Fruit: oil extracted from the fruit is rich in vitamin E.
Leaves: antiseptic properties, formerly used in wound treatment.
