Indigo is commercially used either for its dye or as a green manure to reduce fertilization costs for farmers. I haven’t used the leaves as a dye but we have plans to in the future. Green manures are always a great additon to the homestead, garden, or food forest. I scatter them throughout my orchard to break up the textures and give the neghboring trees a boost as indigo is also nitrogen fixer, yet another reason to plant this in your garden.  flowers bloom in the fall as our fruit trees start to go dormant for the winter. They do take frost damage and a freeze will knock them down to ground level but they come back from the roots slow at first and then by mid summer there huge.
