Alpinia malaccensis - Giant Shell Ginger

Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, this tropical loves heat and humidity. It will thrive best in very warm zones; 10-11. This is a member of the ginger family with long, large, and striped leaves.

The rhizomes are known as galangal are valued for their spicy flavor and aromatic scent. A must for Thai cooking!

Named for Venetian Prospero Alpini, a physician and botanist, who is widely credited with introducing Europe to coffee and bananas. Alpini was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Padua in 1593. Here, he cultivated several species of Asian plants, including this ginger.

In more recent centuries, Alpinia malaccensis has become popular in Eastern Europe, and in India, where it is used in perfume.

Tight clumping ginger scented flowers bloom in the heat of summer and can grow 8-12 feet high; making them ideal for tropical landscaping.

Soak seeds for 24 hours in warm water. Plant 1/2" deep in mixture of well draining rich soil. Place plastic wrap and rubber band over pot to keep in heat and moisture. Place pot in warm, sunny location. Germination can be slow, please be patient.
