Named for Venetian Prospero Alpini, a physician and botanist, who is widely credited with introducing Europe to coffee and bananas. Alpini was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Padua in 1593. Here, he cultivated several species of Asian plants, including this ginger.
In more recent centuries, Alpinia malaccensis has become popular in Eastern Europe, and in India, where it is used in perfume.
Tight clumping ginger scented flowers bloom in the heat of summer and can grow 8-12 feet high; making them ideal for tropical landscaping.
