Some of the most abundant animals on Earth! • Eat just about anything • Lack true cilia • Sperm is amoeboid (not flagella) • Triploblastic • Complete digestive tract (most have mouth with lips- some have teeth or jaws) • Hydrostatic skeleton = round shaped body • Nervous system = Anterior nerve ring • Dioecious (males smaller than females) • Aquatic members have ocelli

Ascarislumbricoides • “The Giant Intestinal Roundworm of Humans” • Most common roundworm in the world • Lives in small intestine of humans • Life Cycle: Eggs hatch in intestine, larvae go through intestine wall into blood stream to lungs, molting takes place in lungs, worms then leave and go up trachea, they are swallowed (and go back through digestive system).

Enterobiusvermicularis • “The Human Pinworm” • Most common roundworm in the US • Adults live in large intestine • Life Cycle: Female adults come out of rectum at night to lay eggs, person will scratch the eggs (itchy) contaminating hands, if hands touch mouth, eggs are swallowed (and travel back through digestive system).

  7. Necatoramericanus • “The New World Hookworm” • Found in the Southern US • Live in small intestine where they hold on with teeth (feed on blood and tissue) • Human become infected when larva penetrates bare skin (usually between the toes) • Follows life cycle similar to Ascaris

  9. Trichinellaspiralis • “The Porkworm” • Live in small intestine of humans and pig, etc. • Humans become infected by eating pork • Life Cycle: Larvae from adults in intestine enter blood and travel in skeletal muscles. • Cause disease- trichinosis

Wuchereia spp. • “The Filarial Worms” • More common in tropical countries • Known for living in lymphatic system where they block vessels and fluids • Trapped fluids = enlargement of appendages (Elephantiasis/Elephantitis) • Larvae can be transmitted from human to human by mosquitoes • Common US filarial worm = dog heartworm
