A beautiful medium-sized, evergreen tree with rough bark and a broad, dense, spreading crown of simple, leathery leaves that are dark green above and silvery below. Quercus oleoides is native to dry forests from eastern Mexico to Costa Rica between sea level and 1400 m. It was once common and formed large, monotypic stands, but now is much more rare as many of them have been severely reduced by conversion to agricultural land. The Olive Oak makes a wonderful bur slow growing ornamental tree for dry tropical and warm temperate climates. Its dark wood is very hard and heavy but not easy to work with.
