Found in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, E cape Province, Transkei, Natal, Lesotho, Swaziland, Transvaal states of South Africa, Comoros and Madagascar in marshes and humid forests at elevations of 1200 to 2250 meters as a small to medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with elongated, woolly tubers giving rise to an erect stem carrying radical, narrowly elliptic, acute leaves that blooms in the spring, summer and earlier fall on a 2 to 10" [5 to 25 cm] long, pubescent inflorescence with linear, elongate, acute, green, recurved floral bracts and carrying many [130], small, non-resupinate flowers.
