Pomegranates from your own garden? That is possible with the Punica Granatum shrub! This particular shrub has been used for centuries as an ornamental plant and, of course, for its delicious edible fruits. The Punica Granatum begins as a shrub and grows into a small tree with a round crown. The crown is dense and somewhat tangled branched with light brown twigs with a sharp tip (branch thorns). The shiny green leaves turn a beautiful brownish yellow in fall. In addition to delicious fruits, this shrub has beautiful blooms of orange-red flowers. These are followed by the delicious edible fruits. The large yellow-red fruits contain numerous seeds in a sweet, fleshy pulp and are packed with vitamins and minerals.
Care
The Punica Granatum is not difficult to care for, but it does need a good summer to mature in our climate. Because of its limited winter hardiness (-8C), this tree in northwestern Europe can only be used as a tub plant in gardens, patios and courtyards. A pomegranate tree can grow in any fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The tree likes a spot in full sun. If the tree is planted in the garden, it is advisable to protect it from the cold during severe frosts. Eventually the pomegranate plant can grow up to 200-300cm! Furthermore, the plant is non-toxic.
