Stapelia gigantea is a flower that goes beyond its exotic beauty; it's not a very pleasant smell, reminding you of something rotten. In fact, it is believed that the hairy texture and leather of the flower mimic the rotten flesh of a dead animal for greater effectiveness in attracting its pollinator of choice: flies. Due to their attractive appearance, the flowers enjoy relative fanfare among growers. Understandably, they are highly recommended to be kept outdoors, where fresh air can dilute the odor.
