Argemone Mexicana
Also known as: Mexican Yellow Prickly Poppy, Satyanashi

A species of poppy found in Mexico and now widely naturalized in many parts of the world, including the United States. It is an perennial herb, growing up to 150 cm with a slightly branched tap root. It has showy ornamental yellow flowers. Leaves are thistle-like and alternate, without leaf stalks (petioles), toothed (serrate) and the margins are spiny. The grey-white veins stand out against the bluish-green upper leaf surface.

This wonderful plant is said to have several good and bad properties to it and unfortunately we are not allowed to list them here. Further research is highly recommended.

The seed and leaf extract has strong larvicidal properties and can be used as a mosquito repellent, among many other things. This plant is also toxic to animals and cattle should avoid grazing it.

It thrives well in poor soil and in extreme drought conditions. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun. USDA hardiness‎: ‎7-10
