This was once one of my most sought after aloes, but eventually I acquired several specimens... did very well but never had one long enough to bloom. This is a Malawian native and one of the shorter, almost shrubby tree aloes, though their stems get pretty thick for such a short tree aloe (only 6' tall max, but with a real trunk, up to 4"-5" in diameter, often branched). Not all plants have stems. Leaves are channeled and arching with spreading, horizontallly oriented rosettes. Leaves somewhat bendable and bright light green to nearly red in stressful times. Prominent white teeth (tipped pale pink) along leaf margins. Flowers are somewhat unique, but reminiscent of Aloe marlothii though with only one stem (no branches), or more precisely Aloe ortholopha (who's flowers are virtually the same). Flowers extend laterally/horizontally just like those of Aloe ortholopha as well. Flower color also mimics Aloe ortholopha in their being deep orange to a bright scarlet. Flowers on stems are all one sided- facing up to the sky (no flowers on the down side of their petioles). Inflorescences up to 6' long, in winters.

Aloe mawii I had until about 10 years in culture, unfortunately it is in the ice-cold winter in
2003 froze as one of the first and since I have never seen another.
The branched aloes look very impressive. Great photos!
