The current study was designed to explore the anti-emetic effect of the methanolic extract of Acalypha ornata Hochst., roots using chick emesis model. Emesis was induced by the oral administration of copper sulfate to male chicks. Acalypha ornata root extract (150 mg/kg orally) showed anti-emetic effect and compared with reference drug chlorpromazine.

AQUEOUS ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF ACALYPHA INFERNO LEAVES IS SAFE IN ANIMALS2017 •
Acalypha inferno(AI) is a well-known ornamental plant, presently with no known documentation concerning its therapeutic use and safety profile. However, other plants of the same genus, Acalypha, have been reported to have various uses ranging from food to medicine with their related adverse effects. This study therefore focused on the acute and subchronic toxicity effects of aqueous ethanolic leaf extract of Acalypha inferno leaves (AIE) in animals. The acute toxicity study was performed using the fixed dose method. In the subchronic assessment, both male and female rats were separately administered with AIE at doses of 100 mg/kg, 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg twice daily for 28 days. Change in body weight, relative organ weight, haematological parameters and biochemical parameters were recorded and analysed. In the acute toxicity study, no deleterious effect was observed up to 5000 mg/kg, hence the LD50≥5000 mg/kg. In the subchronic toxicity study, significant increase in weight was observed at all doses in male rats whilst a significant decrease was observed only at 500 mg/kg in female rats. A significant increase in weight of uterus was also observed at 100 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg. Decreased levels of ALT, AST, creatinine, WBC and P-LCR were observed, whereas increasing levels of FBG, platelet count and total bilirubin were observed in male rats at high doses. AIE produced no significant adverse effects and could therefore be considered safe with controlled use.
In the present study the plant was subjected to phytochemical evaluation and anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities by hiring carrageenan induced paw edema, human red blood cells membrane stabilization method (HRBC) as well as animal model of acute inflammation was adopted to probe the possible anti-inflammatory mechanism and eddy’s hot plate and tail flick methods. Polyphenolic extract of Acalypha indica Linn (PPEA) produced significant anti-inflammatory (P < 0.001) and analgesic (P < 0.001) effects in dose dependent manner. The highest levels of phenolics and flavonoids (9.27 mg TA/g and 8.75 mg Ru/g, respectively).The total phenolic and flavonoid content indicates that these compounds are likely to be the main nociceptive and inflammatory contributing to the observed activities. PPEA exhibited significant antiinflammatory mechanism of chemical constituents may be due, at least in part to the inhibition of PGE2 levels. These finding suggest that of the medicinal herb studied in this paper are good source of inflammations. The results afford evidence to support the traditional linctus abuse of PPEA for the action of inflammation.

The leaves of Acalypha wilkesiana are eaten as vegetables as part of the traditional management of hypertension in Nigeria. This study was therefore conducted to evaluate the implications of oral administration of extracts of Acalypha wilkesiana leaves, on serum electrolytes, urea and creatinine, in normal experimental rabbits. A total of eighteen (18) rabbits were randomized into three groups (A, B and C) of six animals each and treated with aqueous (A) and ethanol (B) extracts of Acalypha wilkesiana leaves. The extracts were administered orally at a dose of 300mg/kg body weight for a period of twenty one (21) days. Group C animals served as control. Administration of the aqueous or ethanol extract, at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight, to normal rabbits resulted in a significantly (P 0.05) lower serum urea, chloride, sodium and potassium, as compared with the control, in normal rabbits.
