Aim Rain forest-restricted plant families show disjunct distributions between the three major tropical regions: South America, Africa and Asia. Explaining these disjunctions has become an important challenge in biogeography. The pantropical plant family Annonaceae is used to test hypotheses that might explain diversification and distribution patterns in tropical biota: the museum hypothesis (low extinction leading to steady accumulation of species); and dispersal between Africa and Asia via Indian rafting versus boreotropical geodispersal.

Inventories of tropical forests on all continents invariably list Annonaceae as one of the most diverse plant families (Phillips & Miller, 2002). In terms of species richness and abundance of individuals, Annonaceae contributes significantly to the diversity of trees in Neotropical forests (eg Gentry, 1988; Valencia, Balslev & Paz Y Miño, 1994) and lianas and trees in rain forests of the Old World (eg van Gemerden et al., 2003; Slik et al., 2003; Tchouto et al., 2006).

Abstract Annonaceae are a pantropically distributed family found predominantly in rainforests, so they are megathermal taxa, whereas Rhamnaceae are a cosmopolitan family that tend to be found in xeric regions and may be classified as mesothermal. Phylogenetic analyses of these families are presented based on rbcL and trnL–F plastid DNA sequences.

Aim We test biogeographical hypotheses regarding the origin of Andean-centred plant groups by reconstructing phylogeny in the short-branch clade (SBC) of Annonaceae, and estimating the timing of diversifications in four apparently Andean-centred genera: Cremastosperma RE Fr., Klarobelia Chatrou, Malmea RE Fr. and Mosannona Chatrou. The SBC includes species distributed in both the Old and New World tropics.

The Brazilian Cerrado is the most diverse savanna in the world. Phylogeographical patterns for Cerrado tree species are relatively congruent; however, the causes of these patterns are not clear. Ours aims were to investigate phylogeographical patterns in two co-distributed Annona spp. in the Cerrado and identify the factors responsible for their genetic structure. We sequenced non-coding plastid DNA regions and estimated divergence times using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method implemented in BEAST. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) were used to relate genetic divergence with spatial, climatic and phytogeographic data. Annona crassiflora possessed only one haplotype, whereas A. coriacea possessed nine haplotypes constituting two groups: western and eastern. Haplotype diversification first occurred in the Pliocene; the split between eastern and western groups was dated to the Early Pleistocene. GLMMs detected a weak association of genetic distance with current climatic factors, represented mainly by precipitation in the warmest months. In A. coriacea, the north of central Cerrado (around Serra Geral de Goi as) is suggested as a putative Pleistocene refugium. The current climate and dispersal and local adaptation processes probably contribute to maintaining the east–west genetic structure in A. coriacea. Both Annona spp. show idiosyncratic population histories, reminiscent of the complex biogeography of the Cerrado.

Photo-essays were born as ways of thinking, investigating and arguing, inserted in researches master and doctorate researches. The dimension of poiesis in the authors' thinking and making photo-essays that were not initially thought to be exposed break the frontiers of academia and gain the space of cultural institutions. Thus, they were exhibited at the Historical and Cultural Center of the Mackenzie Presbyterian University (São Paulo, 2016) and at the Museum of Image and Sound / MIS (Campinas, 2017). In the first, Rita Demarchi's photo-essays enter the spaces of art exhibitions to "see who sees", Vanessa Galvani presents new lenses for the teacher and Olga Egas, highlights the use of photography as a power of invention in teaching future teachers. In MIS, they are amplified with photo-essays by Estela Bonci provoking the forgotten trait of students of Pedagogy course; Stela Aguillera presents the experience at the course Youth and Adult Education during and after the visit to the 32nd São Paulo Art Bienal; Débora Rosa at the same Bienal, accompanying visits from educators, subjects of her research and Filippa Jorge focuses children and contemporary art. Both the research and the experience of creating the exhibits allow reflections on some of the possible processes and spaces of these ways of doing / thinking research. Visual Abstract Image 1.
