Description

It is a fast growing, moderately sized to large deciduous tree, with a wide spreading canopy that has numerous branches forming a large shady crown. It can attain a height of 3-10m. It has a straight and cylindrical bole.

FRUITS: Its fruit is an obvoid drupe with an aromatic and succulent flesh. The Inside surface of the bark rapidly turns brown on exposure and exfoliates into thick woody plates or scurfy flakes.

LEAVES: Leaves are simple, opposite, broadly ovate, cordate, glandular, glabrous above when mature.

FLOWERS: Flowers are brownish yellow in terminal panicle. Calyx is campanulate, corolla is showy with short tube and oblique limbs. Stamens are 4 in number and didynamous.

SEEDS: Seeds are 1 or 2, hard and oblong.

Uses

1. It is known for its medicinal and timber value.

2. It is used for pulp, plywood, matches, carpentry, particle board and packing.

3. It is used for the construction of boards and musical instruments.

4. It is used as a shade tree for cocoa and coffee, its fruits and leaves are used as fodder and for rearing silkworm.

5. It has suitable characteristics for agroforestry.

6. It is often grown as an ornamental and planted as an avenue tree.

7. The leaf sap is used to treat gonorrhoea and cough, and it is applied to wounds and ulcers.
