Origin: South Africa

Type: Perennial

Size: 1-2 ft. leaves; flower stalks higher.

Flowers: Bright red-orange to salmon (occasionally white) flowers, summer to fall; leaves are evergreen and glossy green.

Uses: Borders, bulb beds, color accent, containers, cut flowers.

Wildlife: Deer resistant.

Soil: Likes well-drained, enriched soil.

Water: Medium (except when dormant in winter and spring-don’t let dry out).

Sun: Full sun to shade.

Pruning: Remove dead leaves only; leave bulbs in place. Lift up bulbs, split, and replant when they become overcrowded to encourage flowering.

Pests & Diseases: Amaryllis lily borer, a caterpillar; vallota mosaic virus.

Notes: Frost sensitive. Bulbs can be separated from main bulb to spread plant. From Greek kyrtos meaning curved and anthos meaning flower. Some species of Cyrtanthus bloom only after fires. Hardy to 25° F.
