The native range of this subspecies is SW. Tanzania (near Mufindi). It is a shrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Morphology General Habit
Shrub with brown bark and purplish-green young shoots.

Leaves up to about 30 cm. long; rhachis wingless; leaflets 7–13, prominently petiolate, ovate to elliptic-lanceolate, glabrous or nearly so, 2.6–9.3 cm. long and 1.2–4.5 cm. wide, wrinkled, denticulate or serrate on the margin; venation raised and reticulate on both sides.

Flowers hirsute, purple or pink (± " amethyst ") in rather lax, drooping, long-pedunculate, velvety-hirsute racemes; pedicels up to about 1 cm. long.
