Global description
Schoenoplectiella senegalensis is an annual plant whose leafless and septate stems are clustered together in tuft. It does not exceed 60 cm in height. The inflorescences are composed of spikelets grouped in glomeruli located towards the half of the stem.
General habit
Annual tufted plant of average size up to 40 cm in height.
Underground system
The roots are fasciculate.
Stem
The stems are grouped into a tuft. They measure (15-) 40 to 60 cm in height and 2 to 5 mm in diameter. They are cylindrical, hollow, green and are transversaly septate, with longitudinal striations along their length. The upper part, above the inflorescence, is a leafy bract, with structure similar to the stem. The stems are leafless, usually based on a leaf sheath.
Leaf
Leaves absent, reduced to membranous sheaths at the base of the stem, pale brown, sometimes reddish near the base and ending in an acute triangular lobe.
Inflorescence
The inflorescence is a glomerulus located pseudo-lateral to the upper half of the stem. The end of the stem (above the glomerulus) corresponds to a vertical bract similar to the stem. It is composed of 1 to 25 spikelets sessile, rounded, ending in broad point, of brown color at maturity, and densely grouped in a bundle of 5 to 14 mm wide.
Spikelet
Spikelets ovoid with apex acute or obtuse, 3 to 9 mm long and 2 to 4 mm in diameter. Glumes yellow-green becoming pale brown, about as long as wide, 2.5 to 3.2 long, very concave and obtuse. They have a green median vein ending in a short dark brown mucro. The side faces are provided with 5 ribs. Flowers without perigone (crown of bristles at the base of the achene), consisting of 3 stamens and an ovary surmounted by a trifid style.
Fruit
Obovoid achene, trigonous, 0.9 to 1.5 mm long and 0.8 to 1.2 mm in diameter, brown or black with transverse corrugations on the sides.
