Description

Small evergreen tree with thin, brittle branches. Leaves spirally arranged. Leaf apex emarginated. Flowers white, different from L. littorea whose flowers are red. Lateral white inflorescences.

    Morphology

    Habit: Tree/shrub up to 5-7 m tall. Tree architecture Attim’s model.

    Roots: Prop roots and small knee pneumatophores. Pneumatophores sometimes developed as looping lateral roots, less frequent than in L. littorea.

    Trunk & Bark: Fibrous fissured bark.

    Leaves: Leaves crowded at branch endings, simple, alternate, subsessile, oblong or oblanceolate obovate, apex emarginate, base cuneate, entire, 4-8 x 1.5-3.5 cm, glabrous, midnerve prominent below.

    Inflorescences or flowers: Inflorescence short axillary spikes. Flowers small, white, bisexual, sessile, regular, 7-8 mm long; calyx 5 lobed; petals 5, free; stamens 10, in 2 series; ovary 4-5 capillaries, stigma simple.

    Fruits: Drupe compressed, elliptic-oblong, woody with persistent calyx lobes, apex pointed.

    Seeds /seedling:1 seed. Hypogeal germination.

      Ecology

      Common in mangrove swamps, muddy or sandy elevated fringe areas in estuarine and backwater mangroves. Often found associated with Ceriops and Avicennia. Fruits are dispersed by water. Pollination by dayactive wasps, bees, butterflies and moths.
