Ochna serrulata, commonly known as the Mickey Mouse Plant or Bird's Eye Bush, is a unique and distinctive flowering shrub native to South Africa. This shrub is prized for its ornamental appeal, especially its striking yellow and red flowers that resemble the iconic cartoon character, Mickey Mouse. The flowers have five bright yellow petals and a single, large, red, and round stamen, creating the unmistakable "Mickey Mouse" appearance. Ochna serrulata produces dark green, serrated leaves and small, dark berries that follow the flowering season. This plant is relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in a variety of soil types. It's a favorite choice for ornamental gardens, providing a touch of whimsy with its unique and eye-catching blossoms.  Zones 9-11

Germination

Ochna serrulata can be propagated from seeds with some care. To begin, scarify the seeds by gently nicking or scratching the hard seed coat to aid water absorption. Soak the scarified seeds in warm water for 24 to 48 hours, which can further soften the seed coat. After this treatment, plant the seeds in a well-draining seed starting mix, covering them with a light layer of soil, and keep them consistently moist but not waterlogged. Place the seed tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, ideally around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Germination can be somewhat slow and sporadic, taking several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or into the garden. The Mickey Mouse Plant is valued for its charming and unique appearance, making it a sought-after addition to ornamental gardens and landscapes.
