Description

Dioscorea Bulbifera is a fast growing vine with cute, heart-shaped leaves that feature intricate ribbed veining! This plant is also commonly known as “air potato” because it can grow potato-like aerial tubers. It makes for an exciting, yet easy care houseplant in your indoor jungle!

Some of Dioscorea Bulbifera‘s other common names include air yam and potato yam, because it is a species of the true yam family Dioscoreaceae. It is native to Africa, Asia and northern Australia. In its natural habitat, the vines of Dioscorea Bulbifera can grow up to 10 metres long.

Like most succulents that love light, Dioscorea Bulbifera thrives best in as much light as possible. A big south-facing window in your home will be ideal! It can die from temperatures below 9 degrees Celsius. So, if you decide to grow this houseplant outside during the summer, make sure to bring it back inside early enough!

Dioscoreae have the typical water needs of most succulents. They hate wet feet and are prone to rot root, so in order to avoid overwatering, you need to allow the soil to almost dry out before watering it again. A potting mix with excellent drainage with help with keeping the plant’s root system healthy.

Dioscorea Bulbifera is a folk remedy to treat conjunctivitis, diarrhoea, and dysentery, among other ailments. The plant is highly important to the Tiwi people of Australia, who use it in an important ceremony called kulama. During the ceremony, the tubers are ritually cooked, and eaten on the third day.
