Plants perennial, with robust stolons. Leaves: ligules composed of a line of hairs; blades stiff, inrolled, tips filiform. Inflorescences of short, racemelike branches appressed to an elongate central axis. Spikelets with several florets; glumes 3-7-veined; florets with bearded calluses; lemmas coriaceous, scabrous, backs rounded, tops entire or minuted 2-tooth, mucronate. Caryopses elliptic, concavo-convex.
Halopyrum includes only one species, Halopyrum mucronatum.
