Plants evergreen decuduous shrubs or trees, unisexual (species dioecious). Leaves alternate. Inflorescences panicles of numerous capitula. Capitula unisexual, disciform, unisexual; flowers with more or less equally 5-lobed corollas, unisexual; male flowers rather numerous, tubes funnel-shaped, lobes short, recurved; femal flowers few, with narrower, hairy tubes, 4-5-lobed and aborted anthers; styles exserted. Achenes flattened, woolly; pappuses absent.
Tachonanthus includes only two species. It is native to Africa and the Arabian peninsula. One species, Tarchonanthus camphoratus, grows in Somaliland. No species are known from Somalia.
GBIF records include introduced and cultivated plants. Consequently, the distribution shown often differs from statements about a taxon's native distribution.
