As an visitor from the U.S., I was craving authentic German cuisine on our first night in Berlin. Since our hotel was in the shopping district of Berlin, we had less than a 15-minute walk to get to Berlinchen. Upon arrival, we were asked where we wanted to sit, though we were advised that sitting outside was cooler than sitting inside. So we did just that. As they receive many tourists, they had the ingredients in English under each dish. Our server was friendly and showed us all the photos of the dishes on his iPad, which was helpful as we were not familiar with many of the dishes. He also let us know what items were not included on the menu and showed us the photos.
We all ordered still water (in bottles), the Berliner Weisse, and beers. For myself, I ordered the Beef Gulasch with egg noodles (Rinder-Gulasch mit Pilzen & Spatzle). My husband ordered the giant currywurst with french fries (Berliner Currywurst XL mit Pommes frites). My parents ordered a salad and one of the non-menu special dishes that had pork loin, gulasch, bean sprouts, and mashed potatoes.
The Rinder-Gulasch mit Pilzen & Spatzle had an enormous portion of egg noodles compared to the amount of the beef gulasch. However, since the gulasch was on the saltier side, eating the gulasch along with heaping amounts of the egg noodles helped balance out the taste. The beef was also tender and paired well with the texture of the egg noodle.
The Berliner Currywurst XL mit Pommes frites was... interesting. I was expecting the currywurst to have a meaty texture, but when I bit into it, I found the texture spongey like tofu. If I was told the currywurst was vegan, I would have believed it. I think they should have included more of the sauce (ketchup) that came with it, but again, this is Germany, and you have to request and pay for anything extra here. My husband, who typically eats heavy, could not finish this plate as we were all sampling each other's food and he really liked my Rinder-Gulasch.
When we come back to Berlin, we would love to try the other items on their menu. I highly recommend this place!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 01Apr 10, 2024
Wonderful authentic place with friendly host serving superb German food. Discovered by chance with my family and very pleased we did. Both children and ourselves loved the food, ambience and welcoming host. It is clear why the place is full of locals. Full marks!

I wanted authentic German and I got it. The setting. The owner. The food. The beer. I couldn't be happier with the entire experience. I went with the special of the day - beef roll ups - which is also a Polish dish my mom and aunts make but with a slightly different take. It comes with a giant dumpling on the side and cabbage. Absolutely out of this world fantastic. He also had the authentic German beer and I couldn't but help have a second. I absolutely recommend this to anyone seeking what I was.

After a week in Germany I was ready for some real German food so i used the Yelp app to find dinner.
The reviews looked positive so I gave it a try. I was not disappointed. The service was great and the food was even better. I tried the daily special "Leber knodel with sauerkraut" (veal liver meat ball) - awesome
If ever back in the area I would definitely come back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chantelle T.Edinburgh, United Kingdom29204222058Aug 30, 2016
This place is a treasure. I was so excited to come here for my last dinner in Berlin after sussing out the pork knuckle on the menu and I was not disappointed.
I was welcomed by who I assume was the owner and was seated promptly. This place feels so homely and I just loved the interior furnishings which had such an authentic but funky feel to it.
I ordered myself the pork knuckle with the option to have it boiled or grilled, of which I chose grilled. The dear man who was also my server moved seamlessly between English and German which was pretty awesome too.
My food came out and it was a vision. I was completely thrilled by the look of this dish, the pork knuckle was massive could have easily fed two, surrounded by gravy, sauerkraut and two potato-rosti like things.
The pork was so flavourful and tender I only needed my fork to peel it off the bone. Paired with the warm sauerkraut, gravy and mustard each bite was so flavourful and I just inhaled my meal. The potato rostis were heavily seasoned and a bit dry, overall ok but I could have done without. Given the flavours of the dish a mashed potato would have been more suitable (maybe ask to substitute if you order this meal.)
For a weeknight, this place was pretty busy and towards the end of my meal (I was alone) I ended up having to share my table with another lone gentleman due to the lack of space. I kind of wish he had sat at the bar as this resulted in me hurriedly finishing my meal to avoid awkward stares and uncomfortable silence. So yea, that part was not cool.
Overall though, it was the perfect way to end my few days in Berlin. Highly recommended if you can have a table without having to share and the grilled pork knuckle is a must.Helpful 12Thanks 0Love this 11Oh no 0 - Mark L.Castle Shannon, PA68690290Dec 9, 2016
This is a small restaurant that was in the same street as a hotel I stayed at. I saw the excellent reviews on Yelp and wanted to have good German food while in Germany, so I gave this restaurant a try.
In the early evening it was not too crowded and I got a nice table. The interior is very cosy and comfortable.
The service was very good.
I had a large dark beer and a pork dish that had pork fillets in a paprika sauce with Spätzle. I don't remember the name. It was filling and tasty.
The price for the meal was reasonable. I didn't spend more than 20 Euros.
This is an excellent choice if you want a non-touristy experience and good German food in Berlin Mitte.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Greg S.Cologne, Germany1161884950May 5, 2016
A great German restaurant with elegant interiors decorated with snapshots of Berlin's history. I enjoyed the Nuremberger Roast Sausages - it took a little while to prepare (testament to the quality), which gave me time to peruse the posters and photos that adorn the walls of the restaurant. The restaurant feels very local, although clearly accommodates tourists very nicely.
The staff are friendly, and happy to switch back and forth between German and English while talking about the food and restaurant. It's great to dine inside, and there are also some tables on the street which look nice for the warmer weather. Definitely a good pick if you are looking for some great German food in a beautiful setting.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Initial thoughts are that this isn't going to be the best experience despite previous 5 star reviews. We were probably sat at our table for half an hour before even a drinks order was taken. Thankfully after that bad first impression things did improve.
The local draught beer called Rollberg was excellent.
My menu choices were Goulash soup for starter and a chicken escalope served with fries and a mushroom sauce. I didn't manage a dessert! The portion sizes are excellent and the food delicious. Just the ticket for a hearty appetite.
After the initial slow service, afterwards the service was much more efficient. The window has a sticker displaying various cards which are accepted but when one of our group needed to pay by card this wasn't possible. We should really have been advised of that at the start.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Trang T.Cologne, Germany5267925Apr 25, 2017
Very well kept and authentic German restaurant from the classic decoration to the "home made" food. There seemed to be only one waiter as well as bartender but he was very efficient. The dishes that we had were very tasty with good portion. Highly recommend if you are in the neighbourhood.
