Description

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglyceamia resulting from defect in insulin secretion and insulin inaction. The disease has a serious impact on health, quality of life and life expectancy of patients. The population affected by the disease increase by the day and is projected to reach 592 million or more by the year 2035. Today beside, adverse effect posed by synthetic drugs, attention has been shifted to alternative medicine assumed to be relatively safe, cost effective and readily available, for treatment and/or management of diseases. Plants have rich phytochemicals of therapeutic importance. Today many researchers across the globe have demonstrated the role of medicinal plants in the control of hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. The investigation suggested that ethanol C. febrifuga stem bark extract has hypoglycemic and hyperlipidemia effect on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. It also possessed antioxidant and histoprotective properties. Therefore, C. febrifuga stem bark has a therapeutic property in the management of diabetes mellitus, and could be a natural source of hypoglycemic, antilipidermic and antioxidant agents.
