Physocarpus capitatus (Pacific Ninebark)

Plant Description: This plant is an erect, multiple stemmed shrub that can grow up to 12 feet tall. It has yellowish-reddish-brown bark that peels off in thin layers. The shiny dark green leaves have 3-5 large pointy-toothed lobes, with star shaped hairs on the lower surface. In the fall leaves turn red to orange. Each inflorescence produces a large rounded cluster composed of 20-40 small white flowers with long yellowish brown stamen. Flowers appear between April and July. The flowers and leaves of this plant are excellent for bouquets.

Landscape Use and Ecological Function: This native plant is found in moist places near lakes, streams, wetlands, open swampy areas and damp woods, from Alaska to Northern California and west into Idaho at low to mid elevations.

We recommend this plant for food forests, rain gardens, and meadowscapes. Pacific ninebark is a butterfly host and attracts beneficial insects. It also provides good cover and nesting sites for birds and small mammals.
