Gmelina arborea, commonly known as Gmelina, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to Southeast Asia and parts of India. It is also known by various other names, including Gamhar, White Teak, and Malay Beechwood. Here's a description of Gmelina arborea:

Size and Growth: Gmelina arborea is a medium to large-sized tree that can reach heights of 20 to 35 meters (65 to 115 feet) or more under favorable conditions. It has a straight trunk with a diameter of about 1 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet) and a spreading crown.

Leaves: The leaves of Gmelina arborea are simple, opposite, and broadly ovate to elliptical in shape. They are dark green in color, glossy on the upper surface, and paler beneath. The leaves typically measure 7 to 15 centimeters (3 to 6 inches) in length and have serrated margins.

Flowers: Gmelina arborea produces small, pale yellow to creamy-white flowers arranged in clusters. The flowers are bisexual and appear in the form of axillary or terminal panicles. They are fragrant and attract bees and other pollinators.

Fruit: The fruit of Gmelina arborea is a small, round drupe that turns from green to yellow-orange when ripe. Each fruit contains one or two seeds. The fruits are not typically consumed by humans but are eaten by birds and other wildlife, aiding in seed dispersal.

Wood: The wood of Gmelina arborea is lightweight, moderately durable, and easy to work with. It is pale yellow to whitish in color, with a straight grain and fine texture. The wood is used in various applications, including furniture making, construction, cabinetry, and plywood production.

Habitat: Gmelina arborea is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, but it prefers well-drained, fertile soils. It is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, growing in both moist and dry forests, as well as in plantations.

Cultural and Economic Importance: Gmelina arborea is valued for its fast growth rate, high-quality timber, and versatility. It is cultivated in agroforestry systems and timber plantations for commercial purposes, providing a source of income for local communities. Additionally, the tree has cultural significance in traditional medicine and rituals in some regions.

Propagation: Gmelina arborea can be propagated from seeds, stem cuttings, or root cuttings. Seeds should be sown in well-prepared seedbeds or directly in the field during the rainy season for optimal germination and growth. Hardy in zones 10-12.

Growing instructions for the Snapdragon Tree

The seeds need to be planted when received or stored in a refrigerator until they are planted. 1. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. The seeds like moist soil. Use a sterile seed starter mix, if available. It prevents soil fungi from damaging the seeds and the seedlings. If not available, then make a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. 5. Put the soil in a pot. 6. Sow the seeds ¼ of an inch deep. 7. Water the soil so that it is moist but not wet. 8. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
