The deliciously creamy fruit they call the “icecream fruit” (Casimiroa edulis) is encased in a paper-thin skin. This means it doesn’t travel or store well, so it’s rarely grown commercially. Also known as white sapote, it’s a cousin of citrus and easy to grow in warm climates. It will withstand light frosts and has the peculiar habit of dropping its leaves if under stress (they quickly regrow).This fruit is like nothing you can buy. The size of a small apple, it ripens in winter to a delicate cross of tropical flavour and custardy smoothness.
