The native range of this species is SE. Mexico to Tropical America. It is a shrub or tree and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is used as a medicine and for food.

Distribution
Biogeografic region: Amazonia, Andean, Guiana Shield, Caribbean, Orinoquia, Pacific. Elevation range: 50–1850 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Antioquia, Caldas, Cesar, Chocó, Cundinamarca, Huila, La Guajira, Meta, Norte de Santander, Risaralda, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, Vichada.
