The native range of this species is W. Europe to S. Africa, SE. Alaska to W. Oregon, S. Mexico, Caribbean to Venezuela, Colombia to S. South America. It is a subshrub or shrub and grows primarily in the subtropical biome.

Morphology General Habit
Perennial by a woody rootstock; main stems trailing or decumbent, up to 60 cm long or more, rooting at nodes, the branches ascending or erect; ultimate branchlets terete, ca. 1 mm thick between the nodes

Fertile spikes 1–4 cm long, scarcely distinguishable from the sterile branchlets, their joints about as long as thick, the flowers about equalling the joints in length.

Grand Cayman. N. American coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, also occurring in the northwestern half of the West Indies and along the Gulf of Mexico.
Ecology
Chiefly on saline shores and salt flats.
