Found in Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Transvaal South Africa among rocks and crevices in montane grassland at elevations of 1600 to 2400 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial orchid with almost spherical, to elongate-cylindrical, densely tomentose tubers giving rise to a slender, erect, leafy throughout stem carrying 5 to 10, the lowest 1 to 3, sheath-like and red spotted, the next 3 to 5, linear lanceolate leaves, acute that blooms in the late spring and early summer on an erect, terminal, .8 to 4.8" [2 to 12 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence
