Abstract<br />

The susta<strong>in</strong>able use of natural resources is a worldwide c<strong>on</strong>cern. There are 7020 taxa of<br />

vascular <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> with an endemicity of 50% <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>. Natural disasters <strong>in</strong> form of almost yearly<br />

hurricanes and lack of products <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>market</strong>s lead<strong>in</strong>g to a reliance <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> local natural<br />

resources, create a heavy pressure <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n biodiversity. The fieldwork was c<strong>on</strong>ducted<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g four m<strong>on</strong>ths (October 2005 – January 2006) visit<strong>in</strong>g 49 plant vendors, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 15<br />

municipals of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n capital. Through free list<strong>in</strong>g, semi-structured and stuctured<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews, 420 plant species were found commercialised <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>market</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>,<br />

<strong>Cuba</strong>. Of <strong>the</strong>se, five species are endangered, Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata (Griseb.) Borhidi (Clusiaceae),<br />

P<strong>in</strong>us caribaea Morelet var. caribaea (P<strong>in</strong>aceae), Copernicia curbeloi León, C. fallaensis<br />

León and C. x textilis León (Arecaceae).<br />

Resumen<br />

Una preocupación a nivel mundial es el uso sostenible de los recursos naturales. En <strong>Cuba</strong><br />

existen 7020 tax<strong>on</strong>es de plantas vasculares y 50% de ellas s<strong>on</strong> endémicas. Desastres naturales<br />

como huracanes casi anuales y escasez de productos en el mercado, c<strong>on</strong>duce a una<br />

dependencia de los recursos naturales locales, creando una amenaza severa de la<br />

biodiversidad cubana. El trabajo de campo se realizó durante cuatro meses (Octubre 2005 –<br />

Enero 2006) y fuer<strong>on</strong> visitadas 49 vendedores de plantas, en los 15 municipios de la capital de<br />

<strong>Cuba</strong>. A través de <strong>in</strong>ventario libre, entrevistas semi-estructuradas y estructuradas, 420<br />

especies fuer<strong>on</strong> detectadas como plantas comercializadas en el mercado de la Ciudad de La<br />

Habana, <strong>Cuba</strong>. De ellas, c<strong>in</strong>co especies están en peligro de ext<strong>in</strong>ción, Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata<br />

1. Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>market</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>, <strong>Cuba</strong><br />

The susta<strong>in</strong>able use of natural resources is a worldwide c<strong>on</strong>cern, and here <strong>Cuba</strong> is no<br />

excepti<strong>on</strong>. The island of <strong>Cuba</strong>, 110 860 sq. km, with tropical climate moderated by trade<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ds (The World Factbook, 2006-04-16) hosts 7020 taxa of vascular <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> with an<br />

endemicity of 50% (Beraza<strong>in</strong> et al. 2005). Natural disasters <strong>in</strong> form of almost yearly<br />

hurricanes and lack of products <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>market</strong>s lead<strong>in</strong>g to a reliance <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> local natural<br />

resources, create a heavy pressure <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n biodiversity. Only 20 % of <strong>the</strong> total flora<br />

have been evaluated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red List of <strong>Cuba</strong>n Vascular <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Beraza<strong>in</strong> et al. 2005). The need<br />

for research <strong>on</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n floral biodiversity and <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>Cuba</strong>n natural resources and public<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> about endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong> is <strong>the</strong>refore of great importance.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce pre-Columbian times <strong>the</strong>re exist records <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> knowledge and use of <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

aborig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>Cuba</strong>ns: <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, nutriti<strong>on</strong>, religi<strong>on</strong> and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> (Guanche, 1983).<br />

Thereafter, with <strong>the</strong> arrival of Europeans, Africans and Asians to <strong>the</strong> island <strong>the</strong> use of <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

diversified. This cultural heritage has survived until our days and has been transferred orally<br />

from <strong>on</strong>e generati<strong>on</strong> to ano<strong>the</strong>r (Hammer et al., 1992). One reflecti<strong>on</strong> of this traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

knowledge is <strong>the</strong> yerberias, establishments where <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> and <strong>the</strong>ir derivatives are sold, which<br />

can be found throughout <strong>the</strong> country. In <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are 50 yerberias, and at least 10<br />

more accord<strong>in</strong>g to local collaborators, where <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong> can f<strong>in</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> for medic<strong>in</strong>al<br />

and/or ritual use. The follow<strong>in</strong>g text presents <strong>the</strong> results of an <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> plant<br />

species of <strong>the</strong> yerberias <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n capital aim<strong>in</strong>g to detect commercialisati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

endangered plant species <strong>in</strong> its biodiversity.<br />

1:1 Background<br />

The <strong>Cuba</strong>n botanist Juan Tomas Roig made <strong>the</strong> largest compilati<strong>on</strong> about <strong>the</strong> use of <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />

especially medic<strong>in</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>. He compiled a dicti<strong>on</strong>ary about medic<strong>in</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir scientific names (Roig, 1928) and a book about medic<strong>in</strong>al, toxic and aromatic <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

(Roig, 1945) that has been re-edited several times. The books are still widely used. Different<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country have d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong>s related to medic<strong>in</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>. In particular,<br />

<strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Public Health has evaluated <strong>the</strong> properties of some medic<strong>in</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> published<br />

<strong>in</strong> foliates, Fitomed (Araújo, 1994). These <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> are cultivated <strong>in</strong> farms of <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of<br />

Agriculture, adm<strong>in</strong>istered <strong>in</strong> form of crude drug to <strong>the</strong> “Empresa de Medicamentos” for<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Laboratories of C<strong>on</strong>trol and Quality. They are processed <strong>in</strong>to products at <strong>the</strong><br />

Centre of Local Producti<strong>on</strong> for distributi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> pharmacies (Tamara Santana, pers. comm.).<br />

The last 30 years Fuentes (1988), Fuentes & Granda (1988) and Acosta de la Luz (1992),<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rs, have c<strong>on</strong>ducted various works related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me. Regard<strong>in</strong>g ritual <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>the</strong><br />

first publicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong> was <strong>the</strong> book “El M<strong>on</strong>te” compiled by Lydia Cabrera (1954) and<br />

more recently <strong>the</strong> book “Arboles Sagrados de <strong>Cuba</strong>” (Martínez & Vasquéz, 2006). There are<br />

several publicati<strong>on</strong>s about endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>the</strong> most recent be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> compilati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong><br />

“Talleres CAMP” I – IV (1998, 2001, 2004, 2005) and <strong>the</strong> Red List of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n Vascular<br />

Flora, “La Lista Roja de la Flora Vascular <strong>Cuba</strong>na” (Berazaín Iturralde & col., 2005).<br />

A previous fieldwork c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> yerberias <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> was made by researchers from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Institute of Ecology and Tax<strong>on</strong>omy, <strong>Havana</strong> University, <strong>Cuba</strong>. These <strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong>s were<br />

directed towards toxic <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> and aphrodisiacs, <strong>in</strong> yerberias <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s<br />

municipals, Habana Vieja (Cándida Martínez Callís, pers. comm.).<br />

1:2 Objective<br />

The objective of <strong>the</strong> project is to detect endangered species of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n flora presently sold<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>market</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>, <strong>Cuba</strong>, to make an <strong>in</strong>ventory over which plant species are sold<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n <strong>market</strong> and study <strong>the</strong> multipurpose use of <strong>the</strong> wild natural resources.<br />

2. Methods<br />

Endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>market</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>, <strong>Cuba</strong><br />

A fieldwork was c<strong>on</strong>ducted dur<strong>in</strong>g four m<strong>on</strong>ths (October 2005 – January 2006). Yerberias <strong>in</strong><br />

all <strong>the</strong> 15 municipalities of <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> were visited. The project was divided <strong>in</strong>to three<br />

phases: floristic <strong>in</strong>ventory, structured <strong>in</strong>terviews about endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> and visits to places<br />

for collecti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

2:1 Phase 1. Floristic <strong>in</strong>ventory of <strong>the</strong> species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias<br />

In each of <strong>the</strong> 15 municipalities of <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> 2 - 6 yerberias were visited (Appendix 1).<br />

Interviews were c<strong>on</strong>ducted with yerberos (plant vendors) of both sexes and vary<strong>in</strong>g ages. A<br />

number of collectors (collect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wild <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>) of vary<strong>in</strong>g ages were also <strong>in</strong>terviewed. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> commercialised was obta<strong>in</strong>ed through pers<strong>on</strong>al communicati<strong>on</strong> with<br />

<strong>the</strong> yerberos and collectors; <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory of plant species was made through free list<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

semi-structured <strong>in</strong>terviews (Mart<strong>in</strong>, 1995). The popular names of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> from <strong>the</strong> free<br />

list<strong>in</strong>g were compared to literature: revised editi<strong>on</strong> of Roig (1988a,b), Bisse (1988), León<br />

(1946), León and Ala<strong>in</strong> (1951, 1953, 1957), Ala<strong>in</strong> (1964, 1974) and The Internati<strong>on</strong>al Plant<br />

Names Index (IPNI 2006) for scientific nomenclature. The Lat<strong>in</strong> names were compared to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Cuba</strong>n Red List (Berazaín Iturralde et al., 2005) to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> endangered species be<strong>in</strong>g sold.<br />

2:2 Phase 2. Structured <strong>in</strong>terviews with <strong>the</strong> plant vendors<br />

In this next phase, 27 yerberias were selected and visited a sec<strong>on</strong>d time. The yerberias sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more than three of <strong>the</strong> endangered species and with a m<strong>in</strong>imum of <strong>on</strong>e yerberia per<br />

municipality were selected. Structured <strong>in</strong>terviews were performed us<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>terview schedule<br />

questi<strong>on</strong>naire (Appendix 2) for <strong>the</strong> endangered species. Samples of <strong>the</strong> endangered species<br />

collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Botanical Garden (JBN) were used as props (parts of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> as<br />

reference material to ensure <strong>the</strong> referr<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> same species) to be identified by <strong>the</strong> yerberos.<br />

Parts of <strong>the</strong> endangered species sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias were collected as herbarium material for<br />

identificati<strong>on</strong> by specialists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> JBN and <strong>the</strong> Institute of Ecology and Tax<strong>on</strong>omy (IES),<br />

<strong>Havana</strong> University (Crist<strong>in</strong>a Panfet, Pedro Herrera and Ram<strong>on</strong>a Oviedo, pers. comm.).<br />

2:3 Phase 3. Visits to collecti<strong>on</strong> sites<br />

In company of yerberos/collectors, six collecti<strong>on</strong> sites (Appendix 1) were visited to collect <strong>the</strong><br />

endangered species; Bejucal and Quivicán <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, Campo Florido (Lomas de<br />

La Coca), Guanabacoa and Alamar <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> and C<strong>on</strong>solación del Norte (La Palma and<br />

El Sitio) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> P<strong>in</strong>ar del Rio Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. The collected herbarium material was identified by<br />

tax<strong>on</strong>omists <strong>in</strong> JBN and IES (Crist<strong>in</strong>a Panfet, Pedro Herrera and Ram<strong>on</strong>a Oviedo, pers.<br />

comm.).<br />

3. Results<br />

Forty-n<strong>in</strong>e yerberias were visited <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 15 municipalities of <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> (appendix 1);<br />

Boyeros, La Lisa y Cotorro (2 yerberias), Arroyo Naranjo, Marianao, Playa, 10 de Octubre,<br />

San Miguel del Padrón, Cerro, Guanabacoa y Regla (3), Plaza y Centro Habana (4), Habana<br />

del Este (5) and Habana Vieja (6). The semi-structured <strong>in</strong>terviews and free list<strong>in</strong>g were made<br />

with 61 yerberos (21 women and 40 men), with ages between 29 and 82. The yerberos sell <strong>the</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Yerberia and some of <strong>the</strong>m cultivate and collect <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> as well. N<strong>in</strong>e male<br />

collectors were also <strong>in</strong>terviewed, 49–78 years of age.<br />

3:1 Results from Phase 1: <strong>the</strong> floristic <strong>in</strong>ventory of <strong>the</strong> species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias<br />

The <strong>in</strong>ventory <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias resulted <strong>in</strong> 420 species from 324 genera and 105 families<br />

(Appendix 3). The five most represented families are Fabaceae (20 species), Asteraceae (19),<br />

Euphorbiaceae (18), Lamiaceae (18) and Poaceae (16). The plant parts commercialised are;<br />

leaves or entire herbs (271 species), sticks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form of stems, woody ve<strong>in</strong>s or branches<br />

(205), roots (49), seeds (47), fruits (46), flowers (19), cortex (8), raceme axis (1) and<br />

derivatives: t<strong>in</strong>ctures (8), creams and herb-extracts <strong>in</strong> fat (4), decocti<strong>on</strong>s (2) and spiritual<br />

perfume (1). The referred uses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias are ma<strong>in</strong>ly medic<strong>in</strong>al and ritual. The majority<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>, 213 species, have both uses, 182 species have <strong>on</strong>ly ritual purposes and 25<br />

species are <strong>on</strong>ly medic<strong>in</strong>als. O<strong>the</strong>r referred uses are c<strong>on</strong>sumable, ornamental, artwork, spice,<br />

colour<strong>in</strong>g agent, shadower, liv<strong>in</strong>g fence, musical <strong>in</strong>strument, timber, oil, beverage, <strong>in</strong>dustrial,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumable for animals, glue, detergent, fibre, wood, symbol, utensil, biological c<strong>on</strong>trol,<br />

roofer and toy.<br />

3:2 Results from Phase 2: <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview schedule questi<strong>on</strong>naire and Phase 3: visits to<br />

sites of collecti<strong>on</strong><br />

Based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> popular names, 13 of <strong>the</strong> 420 species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory were found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n<br />

Red List (Berazaín Iturralde et al., 2005). The popular names of <strong>the</strong> species were translated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to scientific names <strong>in</strong> Phase 1 accord<strong>in</strong>g to literature (Roig, 1988a,b, Bisse, 1988, León,<br />

1946, León and Ala<strong>in</strong>, 1951, 1953, 1957, and Ala<strong>in</strong>, 1964, 1974). The scientific names were<br />

verified aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Plant Names Index (IPNI, Oct-Dec 2006).<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> 13 species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 27 selected yerberias, seven species were excluded (Table 1). The<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> sold under <strong>the</strong> popular names azulejo, chicharrón, güira cimarr<strong>on</strong>a, huevo de gallo,<br />

palo biajaca, palo santo and sab<strong>in</strong>a, proved to be o<strong>the</strong>r species than <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es referred to <strong>in</strong><br />

literature. This was <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview schedule questi<strong>on</strong>naire <strong>in</strong> Phase 2, <strong>the</strong><br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> of wild species <strong>in</strong> Phase 3 and pers<strong>on</strong>al communicati<strong>on</strong> with specialists of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Cuba</strong>n Flora (Faviola Areces and Luis G<strong>on</strong>zález, pers.comm.) (see fur<strong>the</strong>r explanati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

chapter 4:1). These species are not endangered.<br />

The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g five species proved to be endangered (Table 2) as found through <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview<br />

schedule questi<strong>on</strong>naire and identificati<strong>on</strong> of props by <strong>the</strong> yerberos. The collecti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

species were identified and c<strong>on</strong>firmed by specialists of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n Flora (Crist<strong>in</strong>a Panfet, Luis<br />

G<strong>on</strong>zález, Angela Leiva and Faviola Areces, pers.comm.). The endangered plant species sold<br />

are manajú (Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata), p<strong>in</strong>o macho (P<strong>in</strong>us caribaea var. caribaea) and yarey<br />

(Copernicia curbeloi, C. fallaensis and C. x textilis).<br />

4. Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

The number of plant species sold for ritual use is greater than <strong>the</strong> number of species sold for<br />

pure medic<strong>in</strong>al use, which is c<strong>on</strong>firmed by <strong>the</strong> yerberos and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory. Plants are brought<br />

from <strong>the</strong> whole country to be sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>. The <strong>in</strong>ventory resulted <strong>in</strong> 420 plant species<br />

that are commercialised <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>. Primarily, 13 species were found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n Red<br />

List. Of <strong>the</strong>se, 7 species were excluded. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 5 endangered species are sold <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>market</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n capital.<br />

4:1 Excluded species<br />

The seven species <strong>in</strong> Table 1 were excluded as a result of <strong>the</strong> structured <strong>in</strong>terview and <strong>the</strong><br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> of species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild. In <strong>the</strong> case of azulejo and chicharrón <strong>the</strong> props of <strong>the</strong><br />

endangered species were not identified by <strong>the</strong> yerberos. Species from o<strong>the</strong>r families were sold<br />

under <strong>the</strong> same popular names. For huevo de gallo, palo biajaca and palo santo <strong>the</strong> collected<br />

specimens <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild did not corresp<strong>on</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> props of <strong>the</strong> endangered<br />

species. Ano<strong>the</strong>r not endangered species from <strong>the</strong> same genus was sold as huevo de gallo.<br />

The species sold as palo biajaca and palo santo were from o<strong>the</strong>r families. The material of<br />

güira cimarr<strong>on</strong>a and sab<strong>in</strong>a from <strong>the</strong> yerberias did not corresp<strong>on</strong>d to herbarium material of<br />

<strong>the</strong> endangered species. As for güira cimarr<strong>on</strong>a ano<strong>the</strong>r not endangered species from <strong>the</strong><br />

same genus was sold. The species sold as sab<strong>in</strong>a was not identified but accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

yerberos, it did not corresp<strong>on</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> props of <strong>the</strong> endangered species. Also, <strong>the</strong> study of<br />

distributi<strong>on</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to literature of <strong>the</strong> endangered species called azulejo, chicharrón,<br />

güira cimarr<strong>on</strong>a, huevo de gallo and palo biajaca, and <strong>the</strong> stated places for collecti<strong>on</strong> by<br />

<strong>the</strong> yerberos of <strong>the</strong>se <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> did not corresp<strong>on</strong>d. N<strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> species sold under <strong>the</strong>se popular<br />

names are endangered (Roig 1988a,b, Bisse1988, León 1946, León y Ala<strong>in</strong>1951, 1953, 1957,<br />

and Ala<strong>in</strong>1964, 1974, Faviola Areces and Luis G<strong>on</strong>zález, pers.comm.).<br />

The reas<strong>on</strong> for <strong>on</strong>e plant name represent<strong>in</strong>g more than <strong>on</strong>e species can be several e.g. same<br />

use, similarity, same name for different species of <strong>the</strong> same genus or traditi<strong>on</strong>-change due to<br />

rarity of orig<strong>in</strong>al species. Due to <strong>the</strong>se possibilities <strong>the</strong>se species are not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study.<br />

These results are <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g though, po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>in</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong>al knowledge.<br />

4:2 Endangered species<br />

The collecti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> five species <strong>in</strong> Table 2 from <strong>the</strong> yerberias and <strong>the</strong> wild were identified<br />

and classified as <strong>the</strong> endangered species. One or several of <strong>the</strong> endangered species were sold<br />

<strong>in</strong> 19 of <strong>the</strong> 27 yerberias visited <strong>in</strong> Phase 2. Specialists of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n Flora <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> JBN, <strong>Havana</strong><br />

<strong>City</strong> (Crist<strong>in</strong>a Panfet, Luis G<strong>on</strong>zález, Angela Leiva and Faviola Areces, pers.comm.), also<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmed <strong>the</strong> species.<br />

4:2:1 Manajú, Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata (Griseb.) Borhidi (Clusiaceae)<br />

Manajú, Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata, is endemic to <strong>Cuba</strong> and is categorised as<br />

endangered (EN) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red List because <strong>the</strong> area where it is found<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g is less than 500 sq. km and <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong>s are severely<br />

fragmented and c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue to dim<strong>in</strong>ish (Beraza<strong>in</strong> Iturralde et al.,<br />

2005). Manajú is referred to <strong>in</strong> 17 yerberias. Plant parts sold are<br />

sticks, leaves and derivatives: t<strong>in</strong>cture of <strong>the</strong> res<strong>in</strong> and decocti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> leaves mixed with o<strong>the</strong>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>. It is sold for ritual and medic<strong>in</strong>al<br />

uses. Ritual uses menti<strong>on</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> yerberos are; purificati<strong>on</strong>-baths,<br />

as a repellent for bad th<strong>in</strong>gs or pers<strong>on</strong>s, attract good th<strong>in</strong>gs or<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>s and as <strong>on</strong>e of “<strong>the</strong> 21 sticks” <strong>in</strong> an offer<strong>in</strong>g ritual. Medic<strong>in</strong>al<br />

uses menti<strong>on</strong>ed by yerberos are to extract<br />

spl<strong>in</strong>ters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong>flammati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

wounds, to treat asthma, br<strong>on</strong>chitis,<br />

catarrh and pneum<strong>on</strong>ia. Manajú is an<br />

expectorant, antiseptic, astr<strong>in</strong>gent, depurative and haemostatic. Roig<br />

(1988b) who also menti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>the</strong> use to prevent tetanus, and Cabrera<br />

(1954) who adds <strong>the</strong> use as a purgative c<strong>on</strong>firm <strong>the</strong>se uses.<br />

The collecti<strong>on</strong> sites of manajú is <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> (Lomas de La Coca)<br />

and P<strong>in</strong>ar del Rio prov<strong>in</strong>ces (Appendix 1). The res<strong>in</strong> is collected<br />

through cuts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bark with a machete. The collecti<strong>on</strong>s from <strong>the</strong><br />

yerberias and <strong>the</strong> wild were identified as <strong>the</strong> endangered species<br />

G. aristata (Crist<strong>in</strong>a Panfet, pers.comm.). Fig. 2 Manajú leaves and trunk<br />

4:2:2 P<strong>in</strong>o Macho, P<strong>in</strong>us caribaea Morelet var. caribaea (P<strong>in</strong>aceae)<br />

P<strong>in</strong>o macho, P<strong>in</strong>us caribaea var. caribaea is categorised as<br />

Vulnerable (VU) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red List because <strong>the</strong> estimated area of<br />

occupancy is less than 2000 sq. km and <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong> has become<br />

severely fragmented (Beraza<strong>in</strong> Iturralde et al., 2005). The P<strong>in</strong>o<br />

macho is referred <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e yerberias. Plant parts sold are sticks,<br />

leaves and derivatives; t<strong>in</strong>cture of leaves and/or res<strong>in</strong>, for ritual and<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>al use. The ritual uses are<br />

as offer<strong>in</strong>gs and purify<strong>in</strong>g baths.<br />

wheez<strong>in</strong>g, breath<strong>in</strong>g problems<br />

herbal dr<strong>in</strong>k called pru. There is also a commercial producti<strong>on</strong> of p<strong>in</strong>o macho t<strong>in</strong>cture sold <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> pharmacies. Roig (1988b) reports that <strong>the</strong> P<strong>in</strong>o macho has effect aga<strong>in</strong>st gout,<br />

rheumatism, eczema, impotence, br<strong>on</strong>chitis and genital affecti<strong>on</strong>s and as depurative and an<br />

aroma comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> pru. Cabrera (1954) writes that it is used aga<strong>in</strong>st parad<strong>on</strong>titis and to wash<br />

<strong>the</strong> hair to stimulate hair-growth.<br />

The areas of collecti<strong>on</strong> are <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong> and P<strong>in</strong>ar del Rio prov<strong>in</strong>ces (Appendix 1). The<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> are mostly from plantati<strong>on</strong>s. The collecti<strong>on</strong>s from <strong>the</strong> yerberias and <strong>the</strong> wild were<br />

identified as <strong>the</strong> endangered species P. caribaea var. caribaea (Luis G<strong>on</strong>zález, pers. comm.).<br />

Roig menti<strong>on</strong>s that <strong>the</strong>re is some mix-up between P. caribaea and Casuar<strong>in</strong>a equisetifolia L.<br />

(Casuar<strong>in</strong>aceae). Three of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewees menti<strong>on</strong> casuar<strong>in</strong>a as p<strong>in</strong>o macho (it was clear<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y were asked to describe <strong>the</strong> plant). This dem<strong>on</strong>strates <strong>the</strong> great need of <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />

to <strong>the</strong> yerberos. This is not a problem from a c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t of view though, s<strong>in</strong>ce it does<br />

not affect <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> status of <strong>the</strong> P. caribaea.<br />

4:2:3 Yarey, Copernicia curbeloi León, C. fallaensis León, C. x textilis León (Arecaceae)<br />

The yareys, Copernicia curbeloi, C. fallaensis, and C. x textilis are<br />

endemic to <strong>Cuba</strong>. They are categorised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red List as follows: C.<br />

curbeloi, Vulnerable (VU), C. fallaensis, Critically Endangered<br />

(CR) and C. x textilis Endangered (EN). The classificati<strong>on</strong>s are<br />

based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> reducti<strong>on</strong> of populati<strong>on</strong>s dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> last 10 years: more<br />

than 30% for C. curbeloi and 80% for C.<br />

fallaensis, and fur<strong>the</strong>rmore because <strong>the</strong><br />

reducti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> area of occupancy, <strong>the</strong><br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> of presence and/or quality of<br />

habitat and <strong>the</strong> levels of real or potential<br />

exploitati<strong>on</strong>. The C. x textilis is EN<br />

because <strong>the</strong> number of mature <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

<strong>in</strong> each sub-populati<strong>on</strong> is less than 250<br />

(Beraza<strong>in</strong> Iturralde et al., 2005: 8-9). Yarey<br />

was menti<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> five yerberias. Plant part sold is <strong>the</strong> leaves, mostly<br />

<strong>in</strong> form of hats and straw-mats. These are used for ritual purposes.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r uses given are as material for bags, baskets, fans and roof<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The area of collecti<strong>on</strong> is <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong> Cental-Oriental (Appendix 1).<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Angela Leiva (pers. comm.), Dahlgren & Glassman (1963) and SEF (1994),<br />

<strong>the</strong>se three species menti<strong>on</strong>ed, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> species C. baileyana, a species not<br />

endangered, are <strong>the</strong> most used to make handicraft hats and bags.<br />

5. C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> 420 species commercialised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n capital, five are endangered:<br />

manajú (Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata (Griseb.) Borhidi), p<strong>in</strong>o macho (P<strong>in</strong>us caribaea Morelet var.<br />

caribaea) and yareys (Copernicia curbeloi León, C. fallaensis León, C. x textilis León). The<br />

endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> are collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild and <strong>in</strong> managed areas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>Havana</strong><br />

<strong>City</strong>, <strong>Havana</strong>, P<strong>in</strong>ar del Rio and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong> Centro-Oriental. The plant parts sold are sticks,<br />

leaves and derivatives and <strong>the</strong> uses are medic<strong>in</strong>al and/or ritual. Plants sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> yerberias are<br />

collected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild but many are also cultivated by <strong>the</strong> yerberos <strong>the</strong>mselves or by collectors.<br />

Manajú is <strong>the</strong> most frequently sold of <strong>the</strong> endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>, with a presence of 70% <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

yerberias visited <strong>in</strong> Phase 2 or 39% of <strong>the</strong> total number of yerberias visited <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>.<br />

The leaves and res<strong>in</strong> is collected from trees <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild. The way of collect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> res<strong>in</strong><br />

through deep cuts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bark affects <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> tree, which reflects <strong>the</strong><br />

unsusta<strong>in</strong>able use of this plant. This makes Garc<strong>in</strong>ia aristata <strong>the</strong> species of most critical<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cern of <strong>the</strong> commercialised endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g>. In <strong>the</strong> case of p<strong>in</strong>o macho, sold <strong>in</strong> 33% of<br />

<strong>the</strong> yerberias of Phase 2 or 18% of <strong>the</strong> total number of yerberias, <strong>the</strong> problem is of lower<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cern because <strong>the</strong> plant parts sold are collected <strong>in</strong> managed areas, i.e. not from <strong>the</strong><br />

threatened natural populati<strong>on</strong>. The endangered species of yarey was menti<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 22% of <strong>the</strong><br />

yerberias <strong>in</strong> Phase 2 or 12% of <strong>the</strong> total number of yerberias. At <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>the</strong>re is an<br />

alternative species for manufactur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> handicrafts, <strong>the</strong> C. baileyana, a species not<br />

endangered, though, through <strong>the</strong> unsusta<strong>in</strong>able use, it is possible that <strong>in</strong> a near future this<br />

species as well, will be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n Red List.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> status for <strong>the</strong>se endangered species is affected by <strong>the</strong>ir commercialisati<strong>on</strong>. It<br />

is necessary to work with <strong>the</strong> yerberos and collectors with educati<strong>on</strong> for c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong><br />

endangered species, and with strategies for domesticati<strong>on</strong> and re<strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong>. This study has<br />

been c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>Havana</strong> <strong>City</strong>, <strong>the</strong> capital of <strong>Cuba</strong>. It is possible that a similar study <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

cities or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> countryside would give o<strong>the</strong>r results. It would be of great <strong>in</strong>terest to extend this<br />

project to o<strong>the</strong>r areas to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> full picture of how commercialisati<strong>on</strong> could be a threat to<br />

endangered <strong>Cuba</strong>n species.<br />

6. Recommendati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

C<strong>on</strong>tribute to <strong>the</strong> public knowledge of <strong>the</strong> endangered species of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cuba</strong>n flora<br />

Work with <strong>the</strong> yerberos and collectors to form a system of educati<strong>on</strong> for c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> detected endangered species<br />

Propose a strategy for <strong>the</strong> domesticati<strong>on</strong> and re<strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>se endangered <str<strong>on</strong>g>plants</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong><br />

natural habitats<br />

Study <strong>the</strong> phytochemistry and physical properties of <strong>the</strong> endangered and related species to<br />

see if o<strong>the</strong>r n<strong>on</strong> threatened species could be <strong>in</strong>troduced as substitutes<br />

Extend this project to <strong>the</strong> central and oriental parts of <strong>Cuba</strong><br />
