Description

Sow thistles, when cut, discharge a milky substance (latex). A smooth plant with fleshy stalks and leaves.

It can grow to impressive heights (2m).

Flowers

Flowers are in clusters, mid-yellow with soft spiny bracts.

Leaves

Hastate spear-shaped leaf with horizontal lobes at base, Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Spear-shaped, sometimes with deeply lobed margins almost to midrib, serrated with irregular soft points. Leaves clasp the stem with triangular, pointed leaf-bases. Stems reddish.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with hairs.
