Description

A bulb with a short stem (30 cm), surrounded by a fleshy leaf base. The deeply buried bulb grows on the beach or sand dunes and can resist extreme drought.

The name derives from Greek, ‘pan’ meaning everything and ‘cratys’ meaning powerful.

In Provence it is a protected plant.

Flowers

Each stem carries 3-14 flowers. The white tepals are fragrant, the corolla trumpet-shaped, with 12 teeth and 6 stamens borne on the rim of the corolla.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Blade, fleshy, grey-green, 5-12 mm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: large, round with 3 valves and numerous black seeds.
