A native to the Mediterranean region with erect stems, branched at the top. Bracts are spiny with white hairs.

Dry habitats, stony and sandy ground, fallow and waste ground.

Flowers

The outer florets are longer than the inner ones. Colour varies from pink to lilac to purple, sometimes white.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Spine-tipped lobes almost to central midrib. Veins and midrib accentuated by white markings.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with white hairs.

Edible

Young shoots and leaves.
