Rough, slightly woolly, much branched, shrubby plant. The rounded, conical bracts just below the flowerhead carry 3-5 spines at the tip of each bract.

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Long, wider in the middle, pointed, entire, lobed or serrated.
