Description

A reed that resembles a Bamboo. New shoots appear around March. From June to July the plant grows 10 cm a day. It reproduces by seed and through underground rhizomes that quickly multiply.

The stems are made into reeds for woodwind instruments (clarinet and saxophone) and are used as wind or sun shelters.

Flowers

Feathery plumes, 40-60 cm long.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Tapered, 60 cm long x 2-6 cm wide, alternately on the stem with 2 ears at the junction with the stem.

Fruits Seeds

Caryopsis: dry oblong fruit enclosed in 2 papery leaflets (bracts).

Medical

Rhizome: used to stop the flow of breast milk.
