Medium-size tree, rarely large, with densely branching pyramidal crown up to about 12 m. Young twigs are purple, mature bark is green-brown and smooth. The leaves are glossy dark green and up to 13 cm long. The margins are smooth or have a few small prickles. The flowers are small and fairly inconspicuous. They open white from pale purple buds. They are female and are followed by glossy, dark red, fleshy drupes (commonly called ‘berries’) about 10 mm across. Prefers a humic, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates either acidic or calcareous soil. Also suitable for use as tall hedge.
