First things first. It’s “orb-reesha”. Even though if you look hard at the spelling you might think it was “aubrey-ate-er”. And it’s that low purple plant you’re seeing in patches a foot or two across, spilling over walls and rockeries. It’s one of the first plants apart from bulbs to bring a real splash of colour to the spring garden.

Poor old aubrieta has had its bad press over the years. When it’s planted alongside yellow alyssum the outburst of colour in a still largely leafless garden can be just too much and people get sniffy.
