Warburgia ugandensis, known locally as the greenheart tree, is an important medicinal species throughout Africa. It is native to evergreen forests along the eastern coast, from Ethiopia to South Africa, and can tolerate both swamp and dry upland soil. Rising up to 30 m (98 ft) tall, though typically closer to 15 m (49 ft), the tree has a rounded crown of glossy dark green leaves. These can be used as a flavoring agent in curries, possessing a distinctive peppery taste. The bark of the tree is most commonly used in traditional medicine, either dried and chewed or powdered. It is taken for a number of ailments, including fever, stomach-ache, cough, and the common cold. It is also used as a general pain reliever. Other plant parts are also used medicinally; roots are taken in soup to prevent dysentery, and a decoction of the leaf is added to baths to treat skin diseases.
