Giant Sensitive Plant (Aeschynomene fluitans)
Hardiness Zones: 9-11
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Part Shade
Height: 3"-5" tall running spread
Water Depth: Floating surface pond plant or can be planted
As the common name suggests, the leaves, like the land based "sensitive plant", close when they are touched. The floating (mature) stems of this tropical plant are covered in spongy tissue, full of air cells.
Set the plant out after the pond water has reached 70º F. Should be planted in soil, allowing the stems to lay on the surface of the water. However, the stems can also be floated on the water surface, with less dramatic results.
Sold as rooted or unrooted cuttings - minimum of 8" to 10" long.
Full sun to part shade.
USDA Zones 9 and 10.
Customer Question:
I have a koi pond in eastern PA. Will the Giant Sensitive Plant - Aeschynomene fluitans winter over in my area? I know that I must cut off water lilies at the surface of their growing pot to keep them alive. What must be done for the Sensitive Plant
Grower Answer:
It is very tropical - and only
winters-over in zones 9-10 ... some of zone 8 ...
not much luck with wintering over
indoors either.
