Purple Broom is a tall, slender shrub with a light, willowy crown seen to best effect when grown in groups. Purple to magenta flowers form at the top of a single 1.5 - 2 m tall stem, in erect or slightly drooping sprays that fade to almost white as they age. Flowering takes place just before the new leaves appear. The flowering season peaks between September and February, but in my Kloof garden, there are always a few in flower, all self-seeded. Prune hard after flowering, every couple of years, to prevent them becoming too leggy. Purple Broom flowers best in the sun but will take partial shade. Drought and frost hardy, it also thrives in damp soils. Plant behind the Crocosmia, and dot one or two in amongst the pleated leaves for interested and added depth to the bed.
