Bupleurum rotundifolium ‘Griffithii’ is a delight for both foliage and flower.
And it is a florist’s dream for cut flowers and filler foliage.
‘Griffithii’ is a recently released cultivar which is considered one of the very best for the cut flower trade and commercial crops.

A florist’s dream for flowers & foliage

Bupleurum rotundifolium ‘Griffithii’ has subtle blue-green foliage.
Which resembles a flock of 10 cent pieces clasping the myriad of stems.
So it provides delightful foliage in a vase, or in the garden where it acts as a misty foil for all other flowers and colours.

Fine & airy chartreuse flowers

While the blooms are also fine and airy with a subtle chartreuse-lime-green colouring.
Which also sets off other brighter flowers perfectly in garden or vase.
Buplureum flowers create a cloudy mass like a haze of fine Alchemilla or Euphorbia flowers.

Commercial quality cut flowers & foliage

Hare’s Ear rivals Gypsophilla Baby’s Breath for popularity and usefulness in the commercial floristry trade.
It is also a favourite for commercial flower farmers because it is so fast from seed and easy care.

Blooms last for up to 10 days in a vase, even without preservative.
And flowers are best harvested when they are fully open, unlike many other cut flowers.
While they are exceptionally long lasting as dried flowers.

Fast as a flash from seed to flower

Bupleurum rotundifolium ‘Griffithii’ is as fast as a flash from seed to flower.
Taking under 3 months from sowing the seed to flowering.
So it is a good idea to sow some seed in the autumn for early season blooms to harvest next spring.
And sow some more seed in early spring for summer and autumn harvests.

Hardy & easy to grow

Grow Hare’s Ear in well-drained soil in Full Sun to Partial Shade.
And while it is highly adaptable to a wide range of soils providing it is well drained; it is most at home in lighter and sandy soils.
It is not a thirsty plant, as long as it is provided regularly with minimal additional water during hot periods.

Friend for useful pollinators

Bupleurum rotundifolium ‘Griffithii’ is a great friend to all our essential pollinating insects.
The mass of flowers is a rich, abundant and long serving source of both pollen and nectar.

How to harvest Bupleurum for maximum vase life

First remove any foliage that will be below the vase water.
Then cut the base of the stems under water with a sharp knife.
Now stand the stems in warm (not hot) water to take up moisture for 2-3 hours.
You can use floral preservative if you wish, but they are naturally long-lasting.
Bupleurum is ethylene sensitive so do not to place it near fruit if you wish it to last as long as possible. Vase life is up to 10 days.

Ancient medicine in the east

Both Japanese and Chinese traditional medicine makes great use of Bupleurum.
The roots are harvested in the autumn and used to treat colds and flu, as well as infections.
The plants are also used as fire starters, and this may account for the ancient Chinese name for Bupleurum, which translates as “kindling of the barbarians”!!!

Bupleurum rotundifolium ‘Griffithii’ is a quick and easily grown annual.
It will gently self seed in the garden from year to year if you leave some stems to go to seed at the end of autumn.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suits beginners & gardening with kids

Scatter seed directly in the garden where you want them to grow in autumn or spring / or sow indoors at any time.
Plants from an autumn sowing will be bigger, stronger and more prolific with blooms earlier in the season.

Sow indoors for quick plants & early flowers: First sow the seed in a punnet on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently press the seeds onto the surface of the mix, to ensure good contact.

Now barely cover the seed.
Because these seeds need light to germinate
And you can use sieved mix, or fine grit, or vermiculite, or washed sand to sprinkle over the seeds.

Then place the sown punnet into a shallow water bath.
So the moisture percolates up through the mix from the bottom to the surface.
Soak for a short time until moisture appears on the surface of the mix, and then remove and drain.
Because the mix needs to be moist throughout, but not wet.

Now place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in any direct sun).

Temperatures of 13-16°C approx. are best for rapid and optimum germination.
And you can use a temperature-controlled heat mat if you have one to encourage rapid germination, but it is not essential. A window-sill or well-lit corner is also fine.

Adding a clear plastic cover or plastic bag helps to retain moisture in the punnet.

And continue to keep the punnet moist by spraying the surface of the mix with a fine spray water bottle, or re-soaking in the water bath, as required.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 14-21 days.
