The Murta is a precious fruit of the Myrtaceae, related to the guava, and is native to the cool, moist forests of central and southern Chile. The fruits are about a centimeter in diameter and are borne in profusion on the delicate, 2 m tall evergreen plants. The Murta plant is showy in its own right, but the fruit is fantastic and little known outside of Chile, where they are avidly sought for eating fresh and making jams by the locals. In cultivation it does best in warm temperate climates from USDA Zones 9 to 11.
