One of the worlds tallest trees, the Coast Redwood can reach a height of up to 110 m (360ft.) and an age of over 2000 years. Its tall, straight, for the height comparatively narrow trunk nevertheless reaches a diameter of over 7 m (23 ft.) near the base. The leaves are short and flattened or very small and scale-like in some parts. Native to the cool, foggy coast of central and northern California, the redwood can form impressive stands especially on river flats at low altitudes. Its wood is highly prized due to its resistance to rot. It also has qualities as an ornamental and is suitable for mild, even climates without extremes of heat or cold in USDA hardiness Zones 7 to 9.
