An immense Gunnera that is endemic to the mountains of southern Brazil and keeps to moist, sheltered areas in the Atlantic Coastal Forest. Gunnera manicata forms a creeping stem that gives rise to a mound of gigantic leaves on rough stalks that can reach more than 3 m across and emerge from a nest of brownish fibers at the apex of the stem. It makes a spectacular ornamental and will thrive in temperate climates that lack extremes of heat and cold. With generous mulching it is hardy to USDA Zone 7.
