A herbaceous perennial plant with a creeping, branched, fleshy stem and large, heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers, followed by prickly fruits that squirt out the small seeds when ripe. The plant is native to the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions but has naturalized in some places. In colder climates, the seeds can survive the winter and it can grow as an annual. It prefers full sun and dry, well-drained soils. In cultivation, Ecballium elaterium is easy to grow and is tolerant of a wide range of conditions. It is often grown as an ornamental plant due to its attractive foliage and flowers. All parts of the plant are highly poisonous.
