This medium-sized bamboo forms an open cluster of slender culms to about 6 m (20 ft.) tall and 1 to 3 cm (.5 to 1 in.) in diameter with unusual and very prominent flanged nodes. The leaves are narrow and only 5 to 14 cm (2 to 6 in.) long. The culms have been popular for making walking sticks. A slower but otherwise easily grown bamboo suitable for temperate and some tropical climates in USDA plant hardiness Zones 7 and higher.
