A marvelous, large and fast growing, deciduous tree to more than 30 m tall with a tall, dense crown of large, palmate leaves and masses of stunning, upright inflorescences with orchid-like, white and pink flowers in spring, followed by spiny fruits with large, attractive, glossy brown seeds. Aesculus hippocastanum is native to southeastern Europe and makes a fabulous ornamental for temperate climates. Not related to true chestnuts, the seeds are mildly toxic and should not be eaten by humans (or horses) when raw, but are much appreciated by deer and wild boar who can neutralize the problematic compounds.
